I’ve started an dance printing business with my wife.
Well technically, it’s an expansion to the dance business she owns – but we’re enjoying working together figuring it out.
I really enjoy working with my wife, she’s someone who just knows how to get things done and how to achieve. Plus our skills, strengths and weaknesses complement. Yes of course at times we bicker and argue over aspects of the business, but that’s part of working with family.
She is amazing.
Anyways, onto the website.
Building an ecommerce website for an apparel business
I threw up a simple holding page in October 2024. The purpose of this page was to get the domain indexed but mainly so the URL worked when linked from social media.
This is what the website looked like:
As you can see, super simple.
Now it’s time to start expanding the site. By the end of January 2025 I’d love to launch the site with a small collection of items we can produce for dance teachers.
However, in the UK January is tax self-assessment month, so I expect all my time will be taken up dealing with accounts and tax. Which means a more realistic timeframe might be March 2025 (end of Q1)
Supporting pages in a website structure
So, what I’d like to do instead is to work on the site structure to help with SEO. That means, creating a number of pages to prepare the website’s site structure for ranking.
When I talk about site structure what I mean are where pages ‘live’ in the website branches (what do the URLs look like) and also how the pages link internally to each other.
Also, one of the mistakes I see many small business owners make is that they never create enough pages on their website. They might have 5 to 10 pages that are generic, boring and bland. That’s because each page is trying to talk to a wide scope of people. If only the owners commissioned a few more pages that targeted a specific type of person.
To start with, I’ll be looking at 3 types of pages to build:
- Boiler plate
- Local seo
- Category
I’ll post here about those pages as and when they’re created.
